Wedding function
Also known as: Haldi, Pithi, Turmeric Ceremony
The Pithi or Haldi ceremony is one of the most joyful pre-wedding rituals across Hindu, Sikh, and some Muslim traditions. A paste of turmeric, sandalwood, and rosewater is applied to the bride and groom by family members — first the women, then often a raucous free-for-all. The yellow colour of turmeric is believed to bless the couple with good fortune, purify the skin before the wedding, and ward off the evil eye.
The ceremony is typically held at the family home the day before the main wedding. Guest numbers are intimate — close family and friends only, usually 30 to 80 people. It is a high-energy, deliberately messy affair: guests are expected to get turmeric on their clothes, and white or light colours are a wardrobe risk. It is one of the few pre-wedding functions that does not require formal attire.
Key vendors typically involved: photographers (for candid documentary shots), decorators (marigold installations, yellow draping), and catering for light refreshments.
