Wedding traditions
A ceremony rooted in ahimsa, celebrated with elegance and family.
Jain weddings share many of the joyful pre-wedding rituals of Hindu celebrations — Pithi, Mehndi, Sangeet — while the main ceremony follows Jain religious traditions. A defining characteristic of Jain weddings is the strict adherence to pure vegetarian (often Jain vegetarian) catering, which means no root vegetables and sometimes no onion or garlic.
Jain pre-wedding functions closely mirror Hindu traditions: a Pithi/Haldi ceremony, a Mehndi night, and often a Garba or Sangeet evening. The energy and scale are the same — the main differences lie in the catering (strictly pure veg or Jain veg) and in the specific rituals of the main ceremony.
The Jain Vivah ceremony takes place beneath a mandap and includes rituals from the Jain religious tradition. A Jain priest (sadhvi or pandit with Jain knowledge) is essential — not all Hindu pandits are familiar with Jain ceremonies, so this is a vendor choice that requires careful selection. The pheras and other rituals follow a similar structure to a Hindu ceremony, with Jain-specific prayers and customs.
The most significant operational challenge of a Jain wedding is the catering. Jain dietary requirements mean pure vegetarian food with no root vegetables (no onion, garlic, potatoes, carrots, or beetroot). For large Jain weddings, finding a caterer who can produce a spectacular, varied menu within these constraints — and serve 300+ guests simultaneously — is genuinely difficult. Baraat's curated caterers all understand Jain requirements.
Start with your caterer and pandit (who must have specific knowledge of Jain ceremony). Then your decorator for the mandap and Mehndi stage. Photography and videography requirements are similar to Hindu weddings — you want a team who understands multi-day coverage and can work across the indoor Gurdwara-equivalent setting and the evening reception.
